White cells and platelets in blood transfusion : Proceedings of the Eleventh Annual Symposium on Blood Transfusion, Groningen 1986, Organized by the Red Cross Blood Bank Groningen-Drenthe

Description

As a clinical discipline blood transfusion encompasses enormous vista, vary- ing from biotechnology to molecular biology, from plasma products, cell biology and growth factors to interleukines. Growth of knowledge in this field has been rapid, and expertise is now required to be mastered and renewed in translating these ideas for patient care. Various types of cells could be harvested - progenitor stem cells derived from bone marrow or from circulating blood as a source for transplants; in the hemostatic armoury platelets could be used prophylactically; granulocytes and mononuclear cells are available for treatment of infections or immune modulations. However, their therapeutic use carries potential complications including graft versus host disease and CMV-infection. Prevention of such complications by irradiation and by removal of immunocompetent leukocytes are important issues. Thus, production of such therapeutic materials ought to address the issues at the earliest, to eliminate those problems while adhering to the con- cept of high quality; the impact of storing platelets for longer periods by using improved plastic containers or storing almost indefinitely in frozen state should be explored. Rapid progress in cell culture techniques and bio- technology have enriched the transfusion medicine armoury with lympho- kines, interferons and cell colony growth factors which have great potentials for enhancement of basic knowledge as well as considerable therapeutic applications in patients.

David A. Kolb: Experiential Learning : Experience as the Source of Learning and Development

Experiential Learning : Experience as the Source of Learning and Development

Description

Drawing from the intellectual origins of experiential learning in the works of John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, and Jean Piaget, this comprehensive and systematic book describes the process of experiential learning. The author proposes a model of the underlying structures of the learning process based on research in psychology, philosophy, and physiology, and bases its typology of individual learning styles and corresponding structures of knowledge in different academic disciplines and careers on this structural model. He also applies experiential learning to higher education and lifelong learning, particularly with regard to adult education.

The Stonemason is a profoundly moving drama set in Louisville, Kentucky in the Pseudomonas ebook pdf 1970s, concerning several generations of a black family. McCarthy's narrator, Ben, reveals a painful episode in his family's history, grounding us at the same time in the beautiful dynamic between him and his grandfather, Papaw. Ben, Ben's father, and Papaw are all stonemasons, but in descriptions of "the trade" we learn as much about this family's capacity for love as we do about constructing sound foundations for houses, barns and bridges. Papaw's knowledge about stonemasonry is analogous to his deep spiritual wisdom, and Ben recognizes both as he looks back on his apprenticeship in the "trade at which I thought myself a master and of which I stood in darkest ignorance. And as I came to know him...As I came to know him...Oh I could hardly believe my good fortune. I swore then I'd cleave to that old man like a bride. I swore he'd take nothing to his grave." Papaw's son Big Ben and great-grandson Soldier do not respond as whole-heartedly to the old man's wealth of knowledge and patient guidance and the tragedy of the story is largely rooted in this fact. Both of these characters have lost connection with the work of their hands and by association with the earth, their family, and themselves. They are profoundly dissatisfied. Of his father, Ben later wonders, "Why could he not see the worth of that which he had laid aside and the poverty of all he hungered for? Why could he not see that he too was blest?" The Stonemason reveals afresh the mastery of character, plot, pathos, and the poetic facility for language that distinguishes Cormac McCarthy's fiction, and which recently earned him the National Book Awardfor his bestselling novel, All The Pretty Horses.

Juan-Luis Ramos,Alain Filloux: Pseudomonas

Pseudomonas

Description

The first four volumes of Pseudomonas series covered the biology of pseudomonads in a wide context, including the niches they inhabit, the taxonomic relations among members of this group, the molecular biology of gene expression in different niches and under different environmental conditions, the analysis of virulence traits in plants, animals and human pathogens as well as the determinants that make some strains useful for biotechnological applications and promotion of plant growth. Pseudomonas volume 5 is intended to collect new information on the genomics of saprophytic soil Pseudomonas, as well as functions related to genomic islands. Pseudomonas are ubiquitous inhabitants and this volume explores life styles in different settings and sheds further insights on the wide metabolic potential of this microbe for the removal of pollutants and production of added-value products. This volume also explores how Pseudomonas responds and reacts to environmental signals, including detection of cell density. This fifth volume covers the following topics: Genomics Physiology and metabolism Databases Gene regulation Pathogenesis Catabolism and biotransformations. Pseudomonas volume 5 will be of use to researchers working on these bacteria, particularly those studying virulence, genomics, physiology, biotechnology, biotransformations, etc. Advanced students in biology, medicine and agronomy will also find this volume a valuable reference during their studies.

Landscape and Urban Design for Health and Well-Being: Using Healing, Sensory and Therapeutic Gardens

Description

In this book Gayle Souter-Brown explores the social, economic and environmental benefits of developing greenspace for health and well-being. She examines the evidence behind the positive effects of designed landscapes, and explains effective methods and approaches which can be put into practice by those seeking to reduce costs and add value through outdoor spaces. Using principles from sensory, therapeutic and healing gardens, Souter-Brown focuses on landscape's ability to affect health, education and economic outcomes. Already valued within healthcare environments, these design guidelines for public and private spaces extend the benefits throughout our towns and cities. Covering design for school grounds to public parks, public housing to gardens for stressed executives, this richly illustrated text builds the case to justify inclusion of a designed outdoor area in project budgets. With case studies from the US, UK, Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe, it is an international, inspirational and valuable tool for those interested in landscapes that provide real benefits to their users.

The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy is back in an exciting, very funny 7th Landscape and Urban Design for Health and Well-Being: Using Healing, Sensory and Therapeutic Gardens ebook pdf adventure. In The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star, Mildred, notoriously the worst witch at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches, makes a wish on a shooting star - and to her great surprise it comes true! But it also spells trouble. Mildred's wish-come-true is a small dog but she has to keep him a secret from her friends, and especially the formidable Miss Hardbroom. It's a disaster waiting to happen...and it does...! The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star launches a stunning new cover look and an appealing squarer format across the whole of the Worst Witch series which includes The Worst Witch; The Worst Witch Strikes Again; A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch; The Worst Witch all at Sea; The Worst Witch Saves the Day and The Worst Witch to the Rescue. Jill Murphy was born in London in 1949. From a very early age she was drawing and writing stories, and was already putting books together (literally, with a stapler) by the time she was six. She went on to study at Chelsea, Croydon and Camberwell Schools of Art.

Owlflight

Description

Once the tiny village of Errold's Grove, located on the border of Valdemar at the edge of the vast Pelagiris Forest, had been a prosperous community, trading the unique plants and fungi which grew in the dense forest for use in dying textiles. But that was before the mage-storms came. The mage-storms had devastated the forest, transforming many of its creatures into hideous beasts, warping the very land, and shattering the laws of magic which had governed the world since time immemorial. Only the bravest souls ventured into the Pelagiris now, but young Darian and his parents were among those courageous few. Darian's parents were hunters who worked in the strange new forest with intelligence and caution, trapping the bizarre change-creatures which had been created by the mage-storms and selling their fantastic hides. But Darian had not accompanied them on their last expedition into the Pelagiris, a hunt from which they never returned. Now, a year after his parents' disappearance, Darian is a ward of Errold's Grove, apprenticed to Wizard Justyn, a bumbling old man who lost most of his powers when the world's magic altered. Justyn insists that Darian has "talent, " and that he will be a danger to himself and everyone around him if he isn't properly trained. But to Darian, still sorrowing over his parents' loss, magic is just nonsense, a waste of time and energy. The only place he finds solace is in the "dreaded" forest, where he can hide among the huge trees and mourn in privacy. And it is from this secret retreat on the edge of the Pelagiris that Darian sees an army of northern barbarians sack and burn Errold's Grove, and watches his mentor Justyn die in a last desperate attempt to savethe village. Pursued by barbarians, alone and helpless, Darian flees into the deep forest. But the vast and dangerous Pelagiris Forest houses more than the monstrous creatures created by the mage-storms. The Hawkbrothers, an old and magical race, dwell in the ancient woods, and Dar

Brooke Shaden: Inspiration in Photography: Training Your Mind to Make Great Art a Habit

Inspiration in Photography: Training Your Mind to Make Great Art a Habit

Description

As a photographer it's possible to train your mind to see inspiration in any situation, and this book will show you how. By introducing you into her creative process, Brooke Shaden-one of the most recognized names in modern art photography-reveals techniques and exercises that you can undertake in order to be inspired by your environment, everyday, everywhere. In addition to the exercises, you'll learn how to compose, plan and shoot colorful, atmospheric, fairy-tale artistic photography, so you can adapt Shaden's techniques and apply them to your own photographic style. Indeed, all artistic photographers seek to achieve their own style, but it's not always easy to see how to get there. This book provides the perfect balance of insight and instruction to help you find inspiration whenever you need it, and capitalize on it every time.

Baldwin's personal reflections on movies gathered here in a book-length essay are also a probing appraisal of American racial politics. Offering an incisive look at racism in American movies and a vision of America's self-delusions and deceptions, Baldwin challenges the underlying Inspiration in Photography: Training Your Mind to Make Great Art a Habit free ebook assumptions in such films as" In the Heat of the Night," "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," and "The Exorcist." Here are our loves and hates, biases and cruelties, fears and ignorance reflected by the films that have entertained us and shaped our consciousness. And here too is the stunning prose of a writer whose passion never diminished his struggle for equality, justice, and social change. The execution of Ichigo's friend Rukia has begun, yet Ichigo himself is nowhere in sight. In a matter of seconds, the power of one million zanpaku-to will slice through Rukia as punishment for sharing her Soul Reaper powers with Ichigo. Is this really how things are going to end?!
